What is the physics communities opinion of String Theory?

Obviously some will tend to agree and some will tend to disagree. But what is the overall consensus? What do top (well respected, proven etc) physicist think of the string theory. I want to research this topic but before I do I need to know if I'm just wasting my time on something that may appeal to the mes but is dismissed by the experts. I realize that its too early for anything to be proven or thoroughly researched but this isn’t just new age crackpot science is it?
