Travelling to Japan, travellers cheques, VISA or debit??

I am leaving on the 27th and we are trying to find out about travellers cheques etc etc. Seems they are a pain in the to get and may be even harder to cash them, is there an easier way to convert our money while in Japan? We are in Canada and I know Japan usually accepts cash as their main method of payment.
